Van is a city in eastern Turkey and the seat of Van Province, and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Van.
Archaeological excavations and surveys carried out in Van province indicate that the history of human settlement in this region goes back at least as far as 5000 B.C. The Tilkitepe Mound, which is on the shores of Lake Van and a few kilometres to the south of Van Castle, is the only source of information about the oldest culture of Van.
Lake Van is the largest lake in Turkey, located in the far east of the country in Van district. It is a saline and soda lake, receiving water from numerous small streams that descend from the surrounding mountains. Lake Van is one of the world's largest endorheic lakes (having no outlet). The original outlet from the basin was blocked by an ancient volcanic eruption.
The Fortress of Van also known as Van Citadel is a massive stone fortification built by the ancient kingdom of Urartu, overlooking Tushpa, the Urartu Capital. It is the largest example of this kind of complex.
